PITTSBURGH, Feb. 28, 2006 - N.A. Water Systems, a Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies company, announced today that they were awarded the contract for the Water Treatment Facilities expansion project at Chevron's oil production field in San Ardo, Calif.
The expansion will increase production of soft water at the facility from 10,000 barrels per day to 70,000 barrels per day. The project includes the addition of an advanced treated water process, which will be capable of producing 50,000 barrels per day of treated water for discharge.
N.A. Water Systems will design and procure the major process equipment for the Water Treatment Facilities, manage construction and train operators and maintenance personnel. The expanded and enhanced facility is scheduled to be operating by mid 2007.
Chevron is in negotiations with Veolia Water North America to operate and maintain the Water Treatment Facilities for a period of 11 years.
First-Ever Application of Advanced Technologies for Produced Water Treatment.
The process of bringing oil out of the ground generates a volume of water as great as 10 times that of the oil produced. This produced water is often either reused to produce soft water for steam generation or is re-injected in a permitted deep well. The overall project will produce two products, soft water and treated water. Production of soft water is common to oil production fields where it is used to produce steam, which is injected into the ground to assist in raising heavy oil to the surface. This soft water production portion of the San Ardo plant is being upgraded to meet new production demands. The portion of the project that provides surface water discharge is centered on a process, developed by Chevron and N.A. Water Systems, known as the OPUS™ process. This process has been demonstrated to sufficiently treat oilfield produced water for surface discharge.
